The Flag must stay up picture is representing the two sides of different colonies giving up something and submitting. The white mans burden shows it would be the best life if you followed the white way and lived the white style. The U.S used this imply imperialism by getting people to think another way, and they where able to conquer more land. We where also able to expand very quickly because of this.

I feel that “The flag must stay put” represents how high and mighty whites appear themselves to be over the others. Which is why the men are handing over materials to the giant soldier.

      • Aaliyah Baumann November 7, 2012 at 2:59 AM #

What do you think that the riffle with the knife in the barrow of the gun represents? What gave you the hint that the minorities where handing the giant solider materials? Don’t you think the solider could stand for imperialism?

Taren Williams- From the white mans burden the line must stay put, Representing two different sides or colonies

I think in this picture it shows when imperlism first started in other colonies. The white burden shows that they wanted these people to think that if you were living life as “white” you would be living the good life. Whites wanted all control, they wanted all the land and did get it.

In both “The Flag Must Stay Put” and “The White Man’s Burden” both show the white’s superior to all the other races. In “The Flag Must Stay Put” shows how every race centers around the white’s. In “The White Man’s Burden” it shows how people needed to be civilized and taken care of. The US used them to justify imperialism by implying that others needed their help.

    • Anonymous November 7, 2012 at 1:49 AM #

True that because the Caucasians thought they were better and higher than all other ethnicity groups and without them they are not able to survive.

NADIYA ALI… True that because caucassians thought…. is mine!

    • Jose Garcia November 7, 2012 at 4:47 PM #

I agree with Diana because “The flag must stay put” does show all the races gathering around the man in the center as everyone around him are giving up something to him, him standing all tall like saying he’ll help them all.

The poem “The white man’s burden” means that they are taken in different groups of people and letting them adapted to their own. Also like “The flag must stay put” because in the image they are giving there weapons and the other group is giving up there what looks like a speech as a sign of respect while some look up at him. Witch it leads to the definition of imperialism which means a country dominating another country. This is how they use these to define imperialism.

    • Anonymous November 7, 2012 at 3:17 PM #

Diana Mascorro I agree with what you said. It’s kinda what I was thinking but you just went more into detail.

  4. Dyon Siregar November 6, 2012 at 11:58 PM #

In “The White Man’s Burden” it’s basically saying that white people are what everyone revolves around. The white man’s burden speaks of how high up white people are to the rest of the people. It’s saying of you are following the white way, you’re going the right way. The flag must stay put incorporated almost the same concept, in the picture they have Filipino men handing guns and swords to the giant white soldier. This justified imperialism in America because of how they had this idea behind white people being so high above everyone else so everyone wants to be like them.

    • Brandon Wass November 7, 2012 at 2:36 AM #

It also looks lie the other races are kids in the flag must stay which shows that the whites think that they are the only ones that can mature mentally.

  5. Megan Wolff November 7, 2012 at 12:47 AM #

I feel the picture “The Flag Must Stay Put” shows the differance within the many races in the United sates, and that the white men come first and down the line to all the others. “The White Man’s Burden” is showing that the white men help the imagrints get to where they are. The whites help them get a life in america.

    • Gabby Veleta November 8, 2012 at 5:09 AM #

I disagree on how you say that the “the flag must stay put” shows the difference within the many races in the US because in the picture I think its when America started imperialism in other colonies.

  6. Sam Musgraves November 7, 2012 at 1:14 AM #

“The White Man’s Burden” and ‘The Flag Must “Stay Put”‘ both show that Caucasians thought that all other races were not as sophisticated as themselves. As ‘The Flag Must “Stay Put”‘ displays that the Caucasians were supposedly the suppliers to other minorities needs and portrayed as the biggest or “most superior ethnicity”.The White Man’s Burden” portrays that Caucasians believed that they had to help other minorities to survive. The U.S. used them to justify imperialism by saying that they were the superior ethnicity and others needed a role model to survive and be civilized.

    • DeNae Gould November 7, 2012 at 6:01 AM #

I agree with you on how this two things are being represented. I believe the white men had to believe they had to help the other races to survive so they could keep moving forward in life and being successful like they were.

“The White Man’s Burden” and ‘The Flag Must “Stay Put”‘ both show that the Caucasians thought that all other races were not as as perfect as them. “The White Man’s Burden” it’s basically saying that white people are what everyone revolves around. and that nobody is as perfect as them.Caucasians believed that they had to help other race for them to survive. the “Flag Must Stay Put” shows that all the other countries respect the Caucasians and they needed them in order to be civilized. the U.S used them to justify imperialism by saying the whites are higher than all the other ethnicity groups and without there help the others will not be civilized

  8. Javier Garcia November 7, 2012 at 1:51 AM #

The White Mans Burden and The flag must “Stay put” both express Americans taking over parts of land and saying that they have to civilize the people in it. And by doing so they take on a burden of having to show them “the way to live” and use that to justify taking over.

    • Hanna November 7, 2012 at 5:09 AM #

however the flag must stay put shows a writing “Anti-Expansion” on the picture which means they were against it imperialism .

  9. Brandon Wass November 7, 2012 at 2:42 AM #

The white mans burden is saying how the white man still fells like it is there burden to carry all of the other races. This is depicted in the flag must stay by the other races lining up with there eyes pointed down ward as if they were lesser. Also in the picture “The Flag Must Stay” The Number of bullets that are visible is 13 (13 is a number of completeness) this shows that the white man not only thinks that it is there task to make all other people like them, but they fell like there are completely right in doing so.

  10. Abril Silva November 7, 2012 at 2:51 AM #

The Flag Must “Stay Put” and White Man’s Burden both interpret the meaning of imperialism. The picture signifies that whites are superior to the other races and that everyone needs to go by their rules so that the land can be better. The poem states the good things that will result by taking over a new land that isnt theirs. They both imply that imperialsm only results in sucess and that it’ll be better for everyone.

  11. Aaliyah Baumann November 7, 2012 at 2:52 AM #

The image “The flag must stay put” and the poem “A white mans Burden” both portray imperialism. The picture shows imperialism because you have an large white man that separates the more civilized culture v.s. the none civilized culture. The poem talks about how whites are suppose to go and educate these minorities. Going back to the picture, the giant white man is holding the flag which mean freedom but a riffle with a knife sticking out the barrow. The civilized group is suppose to be non-violent (hints: they don’e guns or knives) but rather the “savages” are more violent. The poem portrays people who aren’t white are savages. The poet then describes them as “half devil and half child” which means they are evil and stupid As you can see they both portray imperialism

  12. Ameen Sassi November 7, 2012 at 2:55 AM #

“The White man’s burden” and “The Flag must stay put” have many similarities. Both show that white people thought of themselves as more civilized and more advanced than other races. In the cartoon, the white people look more intellectual, while the foreigners on the right look unsophisticated and brutish. The white people are also seen as more peaceful, as they are turning in petitions, while the foreigners are turning in their guns making them look savage. Not only that, the poem says that even though the Americans think they’re helping them, the foreigners resent the American’s presence. The Cartoon shows this as the foreigners do not look overjoyed to place their guns under the American Flag. Basically, the US used this propaganda to make it seem like the other countries needed their help and they were bettering the other countries.

I agree with what he said because whites thought they where better then other races. Thats why they treated other races like they where nothing.

  13. Dalton Sack November 7, 2012 at 3:20 AM #

I think that “The Flag Must Stay Put” represents each side sacrificing something in order to keep the country together and to stay strong, i think that “The White Man’s Burden” was about following the white way when you come to America. I believe that they used these to show that the U.S. stay together, get along, and that the white mans way was best.

    • Faran Eydi November 7, 2012 at 3:31 AM #

I dont think its sacrificing, i think there just trying to improve and go there own ways by eliminating others.

  14. Antoria M November 7, 2012 at 4:07 AM #

I feel that “The Flag Must Stay Up” represents as the whites being the dominant race against all of the other races. On one side of the picture you can see a bunch of white men that look political putting down papers that could represent laws. On the other side there is an amount of different races placing down weapons. The poem the white mans burden represents how whites believe that other countries are weak and we must help them and show them the way of life. These two fight with one another because they resemble the same thing.

    • Helen Adane November 8, 2012 at 7:42 AM #

I agree with what you said about how “Whites believe the other countries are weak and we must help and show them the way of life.” That’s also what I was thinking

  15. Ana Karen G. Absalon November 7, 2012 at 4:59 AM #

“The white man’s burden” talks about the superiority of the whites compared to any other race, it describes other races by saying “half devil and half child” which can be described as crazy. It seems like this poem could have been intended to be read by people who didn’t agree with imperialism to maybe try and change their mind and realize that the white race is superior. This can be compared to “The flag must stay put” because it also depicts the white man as being more sophisticated and “higher up” than the men of darker skin color reaching for guns, while the white men are reaching for documents.

    • Abril Silva November 8, 2012 at 4:44 AM #

I agree because its saying that whites have better things to offer than other races.

    • Brian Osborn November 30, 2012 at 1:34 AM #

I really think that the way you put it was right on. I couldn’t agree more that whites want to make them look like they are the predominant over all others.

  16. Hanna November 7, 2012 at 5:02 AM #

“The white mans burden” shows the ideological mindset that they were better than any one else and that it was up to them to civilize other people however “The flag must say put” was against imperialism and expansion of country beyond boarders.

    • Anonymous November 7, 2012 at 8:02 PM #

      Kayla Anderson-
What makes you say that the picture “The flag must stay put”, represents a contradiction to imperialism and expansion? Don’t both sides represent both points well?

  17. DeNae Gould November 7, 2012 at 5:59 AM #

I believe that “The White Man’s Burden” represents that the white men have more power to take over but yet they still try to encourage other races to get where they are. What I mean by saying this is that, I feel in the poem it is trying to say white men still have to carry these races on their backs and hold them acountable for what needs to be done. I feel the picture “The Flag Must “Stay Put” is representing this one power of a white man is being worshipped. The white men in placing scrips of paper down are representing how they agree with this power. The others races in the picture are representing how they are willing to agree with this power and maybe to try and do it on their own and stop fighting. What I mean by stop fighting is I believe the guns are being placed down is a symbol of it’s time to grow and move on, on our own.

    • Ryan Oehrle November 7, 2012 at 6:50 AM #

      Ryan Oehrle,
To the white man’s burden, i strongly believe that the united states is asserting itself as a power and that the “lesser” nations are to stay just that, lesser. To the the flag must stay put, i say that the nations that are lined up, are doing so because they dont have a choice in the matter, they are being forced to bide by the united state’s will.

      • areonna pierson November 7, 2012 at 4:37 PM #

Where and what gave the info that other states where ” lesser”

  18. Ryan Oehrle November 7, 2012 at 6:45 AM #

    Ryan Oehrle

Now that america had closed its frontier, it could now direct its attention to other matters, such as the worlds other developed nations, and the great race to become the strongest power on earth, the cartoon known as “The White Man’s Burden” literally undermines other nations and they are portrayed in a slave like state, this symbolizes the abusive power the developed nations demonstrated toward their new “acquisitions”. the other cartoon known as “The Flag Must Stay Put”, shows the towering power of america and its massive amounts of influence on other “lesser” nations, and how america’s actions are well justified.

  20. donald lamar November 7, 2012 at 2:23 PM #

The flag must “stay put” is all about how imperialism started in the united states. Having both colonies give something of their possession up. While the white mans burden is showing that people should the white mans way.

  21. Gabby November 7, 2012 at 4:06 PM #

The flag must “stay put” and the white mans burden both show how the whites always thought they were superior. How the whites had the need of having to “help” other culture and races because they were the ones that “knew” how to survive. Also how the other races had to leave their possessions, and do exactly what a white man does.

    • Jahlisha Gashwazra November 8, 2012 at 1:13 AM #

i agree with you that the whites thought they were superior and had to help other raes because they knew how to live.

  22. areonna pierson November 7, 2012 at 4:26 PM #

The white Man’s burden represents how the white men/ people thought life needed to be and that they were the better ones in life. However the flag must” stay put” resembles the difference between the giant American soldier and other people that were not living under the same American conditions were not loyal.

The white mans burden represents how the white people were the better ones in life. The flag must stay represents how one white person has all power and how everybody follows him.

I feel the picture “The Flag Must Stay Put” shows the differance within the many races in the United sates, and that the white men come first and down the line to all the others. “The White Man’s Burden” is showing that there is an unspoken burden to take the responsibility of making sure that every other race is taken care of. i believe this burden was somewhat true in the past, but might be an insult to some right now. -zach walton

    • Rahiel Lucas November 8, 2012 at 12:07 AM #

I don’t see how you take out from the flag must stay put cartoon the different races within the United states. I also don’t agree with you how this “burden” was “somewhat true in the past” because the imperialism of the is the result of some of our problems now.

  25. Anonymous November 7, 2012 at 7:56 PM #

    Kayla Anderson-
When I compared “The flag must stay put” to the “White man’s burden”, I could quickly see the similarities between the two. In the picture, there was a small group of men who were putting down their guns. These men can only be described as representing the “half devil and half child” in the “White man’s burden”. The white men opposite them represent members of congress, overall men in power, and the large soldier in between both groups represents the enforcer, proud to conquer this race in the name of America. This all ties to the “White man’s burden” due to his need to change the savage world into a more civilized one. A world that fights with the biggest weapon they have; paper. That’s why they (America) put paper down as the other men put guns down. Only when needed does America use physical force.

  26. Rahiel Lucas November 8, 2012 at 12:03 AM #

Rahiel Lucas-The flag must stay put is displaying the opposite side of imperialization. The letters the little white men are playing at the at the soldiers feet are letters of unexpantion. The more tan figures who are fillipinos are placing guns that signal they are surrendering from the violence that follows imperialism. The white man’s burden is a theory that states being that white people are the superior race, it is their obligation to nurture, teach and bring up the other races as they steal resources.

  27. KeAndre Davis November 8, 2012 at 12:30 AM #

Both the “White Man’s Burden” and “Stay Put” portray the White’s a superior race. However I believe that in “Stay put it shows how the whites took over other bodies of land and forced other races to live as the wanted. I also believe that “The White Man’s Burden” represents an excuse for imperialism. The whites say they are helping the other races become more civilized when actually they are taking their land and resources.

    • Jazmin R November 8, 2012 at 2:56 AM #

You have a good point on seen how the white people might be taking their resources instead of really trying to help them.

  28. Anonymous November 8, 2012 at 1:06 AM #

    Jahlisha Gashwazra
The “White man’s burden” and the picture “Flag stays put” both portray that the white man knows the “correct” way of living and can help the other people who are not white. The withe men are proud. The phrase “Take up the White Man’s burden–
    Have done with childish days–
    The lightly proferred laurel,
    The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your manhood”
And the guy in the picture holding the flag both represnt that whire people are better than everyone else.

  29. Jazmin R November 8, 2012 at 2:53 AM #

The connection that i see in the “White man’s burden”, and “The flag must stay put”, was to show that what ever the white men thought was right or what should be done in situations, the other races should follow them too. Thats why i believe the white men in the middle of the picture is bigger than the rest showing that he knows what he is doing, having a confidant face on. On the ,”Flag must stay put”, the colored people on the right, that are giving the white men their guns, shows that they’re on his will. It relates to the qoute “to serve your captives’ need to wait in heavy harness”, they have to fight so they wont be control a way that they don’t want to, or serve others involuntarily, and they might have the right person to help them.

    • kristen2a November 8, 2012 at 4:32 AM #

I agree with this because at the time, white people were in charge and told minorities what to do and the white people took care of them. So the minorites had no choice but to give in because rejecting that was socially unapcetable and could of lead to wars.

  30. kristen2a November 8, 2012 at 4:30 AM #

In the poem “The White man’s burden” it says,” your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child. That means the white people have to fix the minorites. While in the picture it looks like to minorites are giving into the white man’s power by giving their weapons to keep the peace. I think these things justify imperalism because white people thought that they were helping minorities at the time. The white people thought it was fair that the minorities gave them their land while the white people took care of them. They thought they were doing a good thing.

  31. Helen Adane November 8, 2012 at 7:34 AM #

Helen Adane – I think that the “White Man’s Burden”, and “The Flag Must Stay Put” are very similar because in both the picture and poem they are representing that the white man knows the “right” way of living and everyone else is living wrong and they should follow what the white man is doing. The white man in the middle in “The Flag Must Stay Put” is showing confidence and knowing and acting like he is way better than everyone else and the people at the bottom are just giving in and just excepting the white man. And in the “White Man’s Burden” its says,
“Come now, to search your manhood
    Through all those thankless years”
Empling that their life’s were nothing untill they were shown the white man’s way of living.

  32. Savannah Drew November 8, 2012 at 2:30 PM #

The White Mans Burden was true because if you stuck to the normal white man life then everything was perfect . And the Flag Must Stay Up is a representation of two different colonies.

  33. Anthony cox November 8, 2012 at 2:46 PM #

I the flag must stay put is shows how white people view themselfs and how they put there selfs over all other races.in the white mans burden they’re basically saying that they have to take care of everyone else and the world needs the white race

  34. Anonymous November 28, 2012 at 2:20 AM #

In both pictures they show that the white race is better then any other. In teh “Flag mujst stay put” the white soilder is gettting things from two different people. In the “White mans burden” the white man is holding up a lot of wieght on this shoulders. Thats why I think both the pictures show that the whites are better then other races.

  35. Brian Osborn November 30, 2012 at 1:45 AM #

I think that the “White Man’s Burden”, and “The Flag Must Stay Put” are really similar. They are both sending the message that whtes are the predominant race over all. “White Man’s Burden”, in mmy eyes, it trying to get everyone to think whites have a huge burden to carry, therefore they are the distinguished race in the World. That we have the right way of living and no one else has it figured out like us. In “The Flag Must Stay Put” also has similarities to :”White Mans’s Burden”, but is also different. This one shows that we are confident and everyone needs to accept our ideas, ways, etc… They really show the same thing; that white people are superlative to anyone else.
